Topanga: According to a noted linguist, Topanga is an old Shoshone word meaning “above place,” or – in reference to this unincorporated area of Los Angeles County – “heaven.” The center of Topanga is a mere eight miles from Los Angeles but it might as well be a different world. Located in the cliffs and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, Topanga is a place of spectacular natural beauty. Approximately 12,000 people live in what is known as the Topanga Watershed, which covers nearly 18 square miles of land. Not quite 2,000 acres of this pristine, natural habitat are developed for residential and commercial use. Warmed by a Mediterranean climate, the remaining 11,000 acres are an undeveloped part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Topanga State Park is located entirely within the Los Angeles city limits and is considered the world’s largest wild land within the boundaries of a major city. The park is bordered on the west by Topanga Canyon, which was cut through by Topanga Creek. In the 1960s, Topanga Canyon became a destination for bohemian artists and musicians. Today, it offers excellent recreational opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The city center of Topanga enjoys a bustling business community located primarily along Topanga Canyon Boulevard. More than 1,000 students are educated within Topanga schools, which are part of the Los Angeles City School District.
